Windrush Gala

1st July 2026

On Monday 22nd June 2026, we had the privilege of attending the Windrush Gala organised by the African and Caribbean Community Association (ACCA), whose Hasland venue also hosts our Monday evening Foodbank sessions.
Held at Chesterfield College, the event was beautifully decorated with flags representing countries across Africa and the Caribbean, creating a vibrant and welcoming setting that reflected the rich heritage being celebrated.
It was a truly inspiring evening, filled with personal stories honouring earlier generations, alongside reflections on childhood memories, resilience and the many challenges they overcame. Throughout the event, there was an overwhelming sense of positivity, pride, humility and love for the local area, making it a memorable and moving occasion.
Guests also enjoyed a delicious three-course meal prepared by students and staff at Chesterfield College, whose hard work and hospitality added to the warmth of the evening.
The celebrations were made even more special by the uplifting sounds of steel drums, from live band DWICA Steel Pans, creating a joyful atmosphere and celebrating the distinctive cultural traditions of the Caribbean.
It was an honour to join this important celebration, commemorating the legacy of those who arrived aboard the HMT Empire Windrush on 22nd June 1948 and recognising the lasting contribution they and subsequent generations have made to our communities. We are grateful to everyone involved for such a warm welcome and an unforgettable evening, thank you.
